Please help Promote The Nueces Canyon

The Nueces Canyon is the travel hub to many nearby attractions such as Briscoe – Garner Museum and historic Janie Slaughter Briscoe Opera House in Uvalde, Garner State Park in Concan which hosts a dance tradition started in 1941, Lost Maples State Natural Area near Vanderpool yields hiking, birding, photography, and nature study, the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area in Rocksprings boasts Mexican free-tailed bat emergence tours during summer mornings and evenings, and Kickapoo Cavern State Park is located near Brackettville. In Camp Wood, you will find Lindberg Park and Mission San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz State Historic Site. No buildings are still standing at the site, but wall foundations are visible and an interpretive map and walking tour are available. In June of 2017, the Texas Historical Association is scheduled to conduct another excavation of the site. A diorama of the site created by the Texas Memorial Museum at The University of Texas can be viewed at the Chamber office and museum along with other museum artifacts from local Nueces Canyon family heirloom donations. The damaged propeller from Lindbergh’s plane is also on display. Call in advance for reservations to view the diorama and museum. There is no fee and donations are appreciated.

POKER TOURNAMENT WINNERS

The 5th Annual Nueces Canyon Chamber of Commerce Poker Tournament was a rousing success. Ten skilled players showed up to duke it out. The Champion and winner of a custom belt buckle and $250 was Ted Williams. The Runner-up prize of $150 and a custom ring was JD Williams. Placing third and winning $80 was Andy Carbahal.

Not enough can be said for the generosity of all the poker players as they often enjoy and game and give generously into our community.  $2300 was raised to help the NC Chamber of Commerce pay for monthly and annual bills. It couldn't be done without this support.

Canyon BBQ and Grill has been so gracious in providing the meal making the tournament not just fun but also delicious.

Your all volunteer Nueces Canyon Chamber of Commerce appreciates your support.  Activities and services that are provided free to the community are:

• Host a fundraiser to purchase gifts for Santa to give out at Christmas in the Canyon
• Spring and Fall Shop Local Events
• Publish the NC C of C Travel Map and Guide
• Promotion of the Nueces Canyon Area via magazines and online 
• Quarterly Member Newsletter
• Collaborate with Keep It Real Beautiful (KIRB) for litter bags and recycling program
• Provides housing for the Sheriff Sub• Station free of charge
• Works with NCCF to care for and exhibit the Historical Museum

There are only 5 active members of the NC Chamber of Commerce. We are working hard and want to help our community to excel. More volunteers are welcome. Come to the monthly meetings that are the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6 pm in the Camp Wood Library. Watch the website calendar for meeting changes. 

The website, nuecescanyonchamber.org has information about the Old Settlers Reunion.  Please nominate your Queen and King candidates. Start thinking about themes and artwork so you can get your ideas submitted for consideration.  And think about ways you can help the OSR happen. Join us


2024 Grant Application And Cover Sheet - Nueces Canyon Community Foundation

Mission Statement: The Nueces Canyon Community Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life in the Nueces Canyon Area by inspiring and supporting enduring philanthropy.

Purpose: To provide funding for programs and projects which benefit the Nueces Canyon Area.

Eligibility: Grant request are accepted only from Nueces Canyon Area not-for-profit groups including churches, and Nueces Canyon teachers/school staff for school needs. Applicant groups are limited to one grant a year and must submit article, picture, and accounting of funds before applying for a grant the next calendar year. There can be more than one applicant from an organization, for example, the 4-H Club has the horse club and the cooking club. Both groups are eligible to apply for a separate grant even though they are both under the 4-H Club.
